NeuroSmart Working is an approach based on the biochemical and neurophysiological processes in our brain. The goal is to achieve greater brain efficiency.
We work most efficiently, often referred to as flow, when the brain can operate in a similar activity (= neurostate) for a longer period of time without distraction. Within a neurostate, there can also be significant differences in the coordination of individual cells and networks.
The NeuroStates
For best performance, the following NeuroStates are important: Alpha | Beta | Gamma
In the alpha state, the brain operates with energy efficiency and economy. The focus of attention is broad, allowing input to be perceived from many directions. In this state, simple tasks can be completed while the majority of brain cells are in a regenerative resting state. Creative-associative tasks that don't follow a predetermined path also benefit from the brain's openness.
In the beta state, the brain is in a state of concentration that blocks out unnecessary distractions. This allows for efficient processing of tasks with moderate cognitive demands. The different areas of the brain exchange information at a reasonable rate without causing excessive activity or stress.
In the gamma state, the brain focuses maximally on individual tasks and blocks out the entire environment. Peak cognitive performance is possible in this state, especially with linear, clearly defined tasks. This state requires a lot of energy, which is why targeted use and optimal utilization are essential.
Two levers for optimizing mental performance
STATE optimization: Your brain should master the various neurostates as efficiently as possible to avoid unnecessary energy waste in maintaining the state.
CHANGE optimization: On the one hand, your brain shouldn't be forced to switch from one state to another too frequently throughout the day. On the other hand, the states should alternate sensibly.
Training the NeuroStates
An objective training method for our brain is neurofeedback .
